HLS10- I Wired My Truck Topper for Camping (Solo Wolf Hunt) - High Lonesome Society
To turn a standard pickup shell into a capable winter basecamp, you need more than just a sleeping bag—you need light and power. In this video, I perform a major DIY truck camper upgrade by installing a custom 12V ceiling light system and a massive dual-battery bank in the back of my rig. This off-grid power setup allows me to extend my hunts deep into the night without draining the truck's starting battery.
Once the lights are wired, I head northwest to Thompson Falls, Montana, following the historic route of explorer David Thompson. My mission: a 3-day solo winter camping trip to track the "Ghost of the Rockies"—the Wolf.
Along the way, I explore the history of the fur trade in this rugged valley, test the new lighting system in freezing temperatures, and face the consequences of a High Lonesome Society vote that determined my dinner menu. Did I get to eat a Whitetail Back strap, or was I forced to choke down liver? Watch to find out.
🛠️ In This Video:
DIY 12V Light Install: How to wire LED ceiling lights into a fiberglass truck topper for under $50.
Dual Battery Bank Setup: Installing a heavy-duty auxiliary power system for off-grid camping.
Wolf Hunting Strategy: exploring new timber and tracking wolves in the historical Kootenai/Salish territory.

The Philosophy: "Pleasant Misery Feeds the Soul." Whether it's wiring a truck in the cold or tracking predators on a 200-year-old route, competence is earned by doing the work yourself.
