T5641-Grant No More Power Than Necessary - Richard Henry Lee
“Grant No More Power Than Necessary.”
At 44 years old, Richard Henry Lee of Virginia lit the first spark of formal independence. It was Lee who, on June 7, 1776, stood in Congress and introduced the resolution that “these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent states.” That motion, seconded and debated for weeks, became the foundation of the Declaration itself. Though absent for the final vote due to illness, Lee returned to proudly sign the document he helped ignite. A close ally of Patrick Henry and fellow Virginian, Lee carried their shared belief that liberty required leadership—and vigilance. He later helped draft the Articles of Confederation and served as President of the Continental Congress. His warning still resonates: a man who loves liberty should never grant to rulers an atom of power not necessary for the safety and well-being of society. His pen began the revolution—your duty is to continue its purpose.
