T5636-No Paper Sold Under That Cursed Stamp Act - Samuel Chase
“No Paper Sold Under That Cursed Stamp Act.”
At 35 years old, Samuel Chase of Maryland was already known as a fiery voice of the people—an impassioned orator who saw British taxation not as law, but as corruption dressed in robes of power. A lawyer by trade and a patriot by conviction, Chase led early protests in Annapolis, rallying farmers and merchants alike to resist the Stamp Act. When Maryland hesitated on independence, Chase rode to every county in the colony, igniting hearts and returning to Congress with full authority to vote for liberty. He signed the Declaration without reservation. Later, as a Supreme Court justice, he was even impeached for his bold and politically charged rulings—making him the only signer to stand trial under the very Constitution he helped birth. But Chase never bowed. He reminds us that liberty doesn’t come from restraint—it comes from truth spoken boldly, no matter the cost.
