T5611-No Formal Schooling. No Excuses - Roger Sherman
“No Formal Schooling. No Excuses.”
At 55 years old, Roger Sherman of Connecticut stood as one of the most remarkable minds of the American founding—despite having no formal education. A self-taught lawyer who read law by candlelight, Sherman rose to help draft and edit the Declaration of Independence as a member of the legendary Committee of Five alongside Jefferson and Franklin. But his greatest contribution came in 1787, when his Connecticut Compromise saved the Constitutional Convention from collapse—creating the balance between Senate and House representation that defines Congress to this day. He remains the only man to sign all four of America's founding documents: the Continental Association, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution. And yet, his proudest role? Father to 15 children. Sherman proved that resolve and responsibility—not credentials—shape history. He did his part. Will you do yours?
